Why do people believe that the war will be a quick one?
They talk about the war when Mildred has Mrs. Bowler and Mrs. Phelps over to watch the parlor.

The people believe what they're told unconditionally..... the Army said the war would be over quickly, and if that's what they say, it couldn't possibly be any other way.
