How does Myers use the character Perry to characterize Lieutenant Carroll, both directly and indirectly?

In direct characterization the reader is told what a character is like. Indirect characterization gives the readers subtle clues as to the personality of a character.

Through Perry's character, we come to know Lt. Carroll in the same way his men know him. Carroll is a great leader.... he's compassionate (Perry describes him as gentle), he is much loved amongst his men, and he sees the war for what it is. Perry's devastation at Carroll's death, as well as the devastation of the other members of his platoon is a testament to Carroll's character.
