Why does Perry think he will be home in January?

Shortly before Christmas,Perry writes his mother a letter to say he would be home in January or February. Explain the reasons he believed this to be true.

Perry believed the rumors that a truce would be called for the Vietnamese New Year celebration (Tet), and that following the New Year the truce would be extended, and the men could all go home.
