What plan did Mr.Fox make in an attempt to save his family?

Mr. Fox and his children started digging, and they kept digging..... leaving Mrs. Fox behind because she was too unwell. He planned to have them dig until they were under the chicken house, but he didn't tell them in case they didn't make it.
