What did people create or build to enhance the beauty of the camp?

I recall that Papa paints and sketches: he even builds a rock garden outside the Wakatsuki barracks.

On Page 75, it says "He (referring to Papa) brought back chunks of driftwood, and he would pass long hours sitting on the steps carving myrtle limbs into benches, table legs, and lamps, filling our rooms with bits of gnarled, polished furniture."
