Who is Radine? Why does Jeanne like her?

Radine was actually the girl who had commented on Jeanne's reading. She was a classmate and neighbor in the Cabrillo homes. The two became friends, and Jeanne liked her because although Radine's mother drew the line.... Radine didn't. In fact, Radine made it her job to protect Jeanne. She challenged other students, spoke up for her friend, and affirmed Jeanne's identity as an American citizen.
