Why was Jeanne able to handle living there more easily than some other people

I think the grown men with families had it much harder. They were stripped of their responsibility and pride. They were no longer the head of the family. They lost their sense of tradition and meaning. Jeanne was young and found it easier to adapt to a new culture and "American" ways.
