There is a father/son motif throughout the narrative. Throughout the story we are confronted with the question; what does it take to be a good man? Troy demands certain "masculine" attributes of his son that reflect his own experience largely because anything else reminds him of his own failures. Cory's attempt at professional sports, for example, isn't masculine because Try feels cheated out of his shot at professional sports.
