this play is set in 1957. Given the racial climate of the country at that time, how realistic are Cory's ambitions? How reasonable are his father's criticism

I always thought that Troy is dysfunctional regardless of the time or political climate. Troy has deep seated issues with his own father that seem to manifest in similar ways with Cory. Cory's football ambitions were not out of the question . Segregation in football was ending by that time, although huge problems still existed. Unfortunately Corey had no support from his father.
