Matilda's mother is thinking of sending her to the country to keep her safe from the deadly fever that is spreading throughout the city. Lucille (Matilda's mother) is worried that it might be yellow fever.
“I was thinking of sending her to the country, to the Ludingtons at Gwynedd. You encourage her to go deeper into town.” Mother frowned.
