Mattie's mother comes down with the fever. Mr. Rowley checks on Mrs. Cook and says she doesn't have yellow fever but a grippe. He prescribes routine bathing and rest.

In Chapter Ten, Dr. Kerr comes to treat Mattie's mother and quickly diagnoses yellow fever. He bleeds her and makes arrangements for her to go to the country.
