Fifth Business
Part I Mrs. Dempster
Chapter 12
Dunstan has a philosophical mind that searches for meaning in the inanimate. He looks for the metaphorical and the metaphysical because they say so much more to him than mere reason. Mrs. Dempster , for example, presents to him more than just a woman in need of help. She becomes the embodiment of his saviour, his obsession, his torment, and his love. She is the metaphor of the Holy Virgin as well as the sinful Jezebel.
