Charlie hopes that being smart will improve his standing at the bakery and enhance his friendship with the other men. The author uses dramatic irony to illustrate Charlie's alienation rather than acceptance. His brilliance alienates the people he knew at work, and it even causes him to be fired from his job.

“This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I knew and loved, driven me out of the bakery. Now I’m more alone than ever before." pg. 83
