At the end of the novel, Charlie asks Alice — and everyone else — not to feel bad for him. He achieved what he really wanted, and he says, “I lernd a lot of things… And Im glad I found out all about my family and me… now I know I had a family and I was a person just like evryone” (238). Charlie's greatest desire was to be like everyone else. Through the experiment, his intelligence, and a handful of people who really loved him and provided emotional support, Charlie was able to be a “normal” person for some time between the extreme periods of alienation. He regressed, yes, but he didn't lose the things that really mattered.
