Why does the author’s use of 1st person point of view allow the reader to learn more about Charlie’s emotions than they would from a 3rd person point of view narration?

The author's use of the 1st person allows us to know what Charlie is thinking and feeling. We come to understand the way he feels about the process, and we also see how he feels about his "friends".
