Jefferson's thoughts are definitely used most commonly in history books.
Jefferson and Adams had very different views regarding the American Revolution. Jefferson's depiction of the war was highly romanticized and skated over the messy bits, putting the Revolution in a better light. On the other hand, Adams considered the Revolution to have been unplanned, unsteady, and believed they had survived on pure chance. Ellis states that Jefferson's romanticized view is the one depicted in our history books, and not Adam's harsher view of the matter.
