What does Ellis mean when when he says that the public figures on which he focuses in this book were "Americas first, and, in many respects, its only natural aristocracy"? In what sense is this true?
Ellis, in describing the men who fought for and conceived our democracy, understood that these men were as close to aristocracy as the colonies would ever get. Their place in history isn't based upon popularity, elections, or a reliance on positive media. They were born to be great. They stood up for what they believed and were willing to sacrifice themselves in the process..... there was no return on their investment, other than what the America they dreamed of would become.
