The correspondence between Adams and Jefferson eventually became something of a debate between two separate ideals they believed in...... and these ideals were what had caused strife between the two since the beginning.

Adam's political beliefs supported a strong central government; Jefferson supported that the main political power be granted to individual states.

Adams believed government (and those serving as political representatives) should be in the hands of wise, well-educated men...... not in the hands of the general public. Jefferson, on the other hand, believed government by the general public was exactly what the revolution was all about in the first place. These ideals are the theme of their correspondence, and the reason the two came to lead to different political factions.
