Within the context of the book, freedom and independence means a person's right to control their own destiny without the interference of government or special interest groups. Certainly America does not have a monopoly on these traits even though some people might like to think so. Freedom and independence are universal traits that thrive in other parts of the world like Canada, Western Europe, and parts of Asia.
