Adams made the most prudent decision of his presidency by sending another peace delegate to France, who successfully ended the stalemate. War was averted, and American isolation was ensured for the next century. This decision was made without Abigail's advice.

The fallout was Adams' own political suicide. Adams's cabinet was run by Hamilton, who was planning to amass a large U.S. Army, in the secret hopes of adding the countries of South America to the U.S. territories. Adams’s peace negations effectively squashed Hamilton’s plans. Under Hamilton's leadership, the Federalist party officially cut ties with the President.
