Washington's farewell address had two main points that were summarized easily: unity at home and independence abroad. Washington spoke of the need for national unity, denouncing excessive partisanship; especially in the form of political parties. Washington also spoke about foreign policy, calling for American neutrality anddiplomatic independence in European affairs. By his contemporaries, Washington'sfarewell address was seen as thoroughly Republican, stepping down from all the power.Ellis thought this move showed Washington's deepest allegiances were republican, and his farewell address was telling America how to survive without a king.
