Callender collaborated with Jefferson in a smear campaign against Adams. Adams was wrongly accused of sending a second delegate to France because it served his own purposes rather the the best interests of the United States (peace). This was grossly untrue. Callender also wrote a series of articles, for which he was later arrested. In Callender's own words, “This federal gem (Adams) ...is not only a repulsive pendant, a gross hypocrite, and an unprincipled oppressor, but...in private life, one of the most egregious fools upon the continent.”
