Why did the debate on slavery end in "silence?"

The decision to remain silent was morally wrong, and it is evident that many of the founding brothers supported the emancipation of slaves and a future end to slavery itself. Unfortunately, the divisions were so great during the debate that people feared the inner conflict would divide the country so they remained silent. Indeed, this issue would later prove to divide the country.
