Duels were an imported form of defending one's honor. They still occurred regularly after the Hamilton/ Burr incident, but even before this duels were condemned by both Washington and Franklin. Although dueling remained popular in the southern states, by the time of the Civil War they were extremely rare. The public was shocked by the act, and protesters didn't hold back their disdain for what was considered cold-blooded murder.
