In the start of the essay, Bacon notes that marriage and children are "impediments to great enterprises." He goes on, however, to say that fathers "have greater care of future times." It is a father's responsibility to help shape the future world through the things they teach their children, something far more important than the "great enterprises" of men who remain childless.
