I actually read this poem for the first time since your question. It evokes a lonely isolated childhood. Much of the prose feels sad and lonely yet he ends the poem with a declaration of happiness, βAnd here I am, the / center of all beauty! / writing these poems! / Imagine!β The irony seems to be that what once was a lonely experience has turned into a celebration of isolation away from the maddening crowed. He celebrates the introspection and peace that comes from nature and seclusion.
