The cottagers found themselves living in the woods after fleeing Paris. Safie's father had been unjustly imprisoned. Felix arranged for Safie's father's release, but her father broke his promise to allow Felix to marry her. As a result of assisting in Safie's father's escape, Felix's family was stripped of their ancestral fortune and title.... they were exiled.
