I personally do not see Walton as a reliable narrator. His views are self-centered and opinionated. His letters recount a story he's been told. Walton also has a well documented desire for companionship..... friendship. In the end, it is his hope that Victor will fulfill this role. Victor, however, has seen every close relationship he'd ever had end in tragedy.
