His letters to his sister indicate his desire to search for the North Pole and his preparation including the gaining of his crew and the preparing for being away for a very long time. His enterprise is centered around his goal and his wanting to do anything to accomplish that goal.

The narrator Robert Walton prepares for his travels by reading various literature on the places that he wants to go to and planning accordingly. He also prepares for the excursion by collecting appropriate clothing and supplies that will be adequate for Arctic weather.
