How is it that Frankenstein almost dies?

When he encounters Walton and Walton takes him aboard his ship, Frankenstein is nearly frozen and is definitely only half alive. At this point, early in the novel, we begin to learn where Frankenstein has been; in this half dead state, he begins the narration of the story of how he has gotten to the place he is.
