In Chapter Seven, William's death sets a tone of sadness and confusion. Victor's fear resurfaces making him incapable of action and leading him to delay his trip home. Once home, a sighting of the monster puts Victor into a panic. Justine is accused of William's murder, and Victor does not come forth with the truth. His fear and selfishness make Justine's defense an impossibility.
