Is death victors only option for escape?

Victor longs for death and contemplates suicide. He cannot live with the events he has caused, so he just stops wanting to live. Is this his only option? I think not. He could have taken responsibility for his own actions, and he could have tried to solve the situation rather than run away from it. Had he manned up from the first, many lives could have been saved. Death was the option Victor chose, not the only option he had.
