Victor constantly gets sick either emotionally, physically or both. His many stresses and regrets seem to lead to illness and separate from society. This is Victor's essential means of escape. Victor seems to feel that his physical separation from his stressor somehow alleviates his guilt and responsibility. Victor's illness can consume him for months. If he is able to he will simply flee and head for remote places like the Alps. His illnesses are born out of an individual and societal guilt that Victor puts upon himself.
