It gives "the creature" a sense of otherness throughout the whole story. Although human, he is seen as a monstrosity. He is not only abandoned by Victor, he is abandoned by humanity. He lacks a name, security, love, purpose....These are the things people live for. The creature remains an outsider in a world that he has a right to be in.
