When did Walton meet Mr. Frankenstein?

Walton meets Frankenstein while aboard ship on his journey to the North Pole region. Frankenstein shows up on a dog sled and asks where the ship is bound..... he then climbs aboard. Frankenstein's appearance on the ice comes at the start of the novel and precedes the telling of his story.
