who is a hero

That's difficult. I don't think anyone is a hero in their story. The theme is about broken would-be heroes and shattered dreams. Victor is a shell of a man haunted by his own creation. Walton is a lonely failed explorer and the creature is a tormented monstrosity looking for a shred of acceptance.
