The full title of the novel, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, alludes to Victor reaching beyond his abilities to create life from death. Just as Prometheus steals fire from Zeus, Victor steals the secrets of giving life from God. Zeus punished Prometheus for his hubris by chaining him to a rock for eternity and sending an eagle to eat his liver everyday. Victor is punished by his creature who stalks and kills everybody that is dear to him.
