Why does the monster ask himself who he was?
In chapters 13-14 the monster asks a most important question: WHAT WAS I? Why was he asking this question?

The monster is trying to figure out where he belongs. As an outcast, he's trying to understand why he cannot have what the cottagers have, nor, can he fit into their lives.
