Bechdel's own sexuality is a secret from her family until she realizes that she is a lesbian at age 19, and calls her parents to come out to them. Her father's sexuality, arguably the focus of the memoir, is secretive in different degrees until after his death. This book is written with hindsight, so Bechdel is able to hint at her father's relationships with adolescent boys during her childhood, though at the time, that part of his life was secretive.
