If Anton was genetically superior to Vincent, why was their ultimate fate so different?

At one point Anton and Vincent have a swim competition as adults. This time Anton can't go further than Vincent. Vincent explains that his success is based on not keeping any energy to swim back. He goes for broke. He will succeed or drown. Vincent applies this to his life.
