The protagonist would be the narrator, a young Englishman serving as a police officer in Burma during the 1920s, when Burma was part of British colony. The young policeman is constantly dealing with the local people that don't trust or want him there. Despite his personal belief against British rule in Burma, the people see him as an occupier. The policeman faces the conflict of not harming the escaped elephant or relenting to the crowd that wants him to kill it.
