Ironically, the elephant has turned peaceful one or will is for us to destroy it. How does this situation (of doing what is expected of you merely to impress others) illustrate or rolls concerned with the mud with the loss of individual freedom? Orwell shot the elephant not because he felt it was dangerous any longer, but rather to save face among the Burmanese people.

I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool.
