How can the reader tell that alice has an eating disorder

First, we get to read her diary, and Alice's unhappiness with her body takes precedence from the start. The over-eating, the thoughts of throwing-up, her mother's desire to force her to eat..... and her eventual obsession with not eating at all, are all signals of an eating disorder.
