Before attempting to answer this question, we should keep in mind that Plato's characters are primarily "idea vehicles"--not highly developed individuals with profound psychological complexity. Plato is trying to provide an avenue for coherent philosophical discussion, so it makes sense to change views if one finds himself on the wrong side of the better argument.
