During Victorian times, it was virtually impossible to escape the social class you were born into. Opportunities really only existed within those levels. Thus, if you were born poor, it was likely you'd remain poor. If you were born into the upper class, your opportunities would be endless. Poverty was a trap, and it wasn't until the poor began to be educated that this situation would begin to change.
