There is the world of the poor English class and then there was the world of the "gentlemen" rich class. Pip was born poor and wanted to do the unimagionable: he wanted to join the wealthy class. Is this the stuff of fantasy or was it possible to achieve this in the 1800's? We find out that it was largely the stuff of fantasy. Despite having a benefactor, Pip could never join the rich class. In attempting this, he alienates the people that really matter to him.
