How does Dickens characterize Pip?

Pip is a pretty complex character for a simple guy. He is an orphan and a dreamer. He tells stories to his sister and Mr. Pumblechook of Miss Havisham’s velvet carriage and huge dogs that eat veal cutlets out of silver baskets. He dreams of being a "gentleman" but is always pulled by his natural inclinations of a simple life. He is an orphan with compassion (he helps the convict) yet he sometime forgets what he should really value in life. He's also a lovesick romantic for much of the book (Estella!!).
