How does Dickens present different attitudes to childhood?

We as readers are able to experience different backstories and portrayals of how children were treated in Victorian era Britian. We can see this through Mrs. Joe's treatment of Pip but also, other characters such as Magwitch who also had a trying time as a child. Therefore, how does Dickens effectively convey attitudes towards childhood/ treatment of children?
