Pip pretends not to know what place the prison is. Pip feels a girl of Estella's "stature" should not know of such places. Of course Pip is in love with the idea he has created about Estella rather than Estella herself. He had put Estella in a pedestal that is neither real nor deserved,
"I thought of the beautiful young Estella, proud and refined, coming towards me, and I thought with absolute abhorrence of the contrast between the jail and her."
