 Magwitch finally enlightens Pip that his new station in life has come courtesy not of Mrs. Havisham but rather the convict himself. Pip was not self-made or even made from the money of an old spinster. Pip was the product of a convict. Pip decides he cannot accept Magwitch's money even though Magwitch made it from working hard in Australia. Magwitch's money is the only reason Pip is living the life of a “gentleman.” .

Magwitch tells Pip that he is Pip's benefactor. Pip does not take this news lightly at first, for many reasons. The entire novel, Pip believed his benefactress to be Miss Havisham, and that she was helping him become a gentleman so that he could marry Estella. When finding out Magwitch was his benefactor, it finally hit him that he'd never have a shot with Estella. Additionally, Magwitch is an escaped convict, so his social status is very low. Pip is now a snobby gentleman, and at this point in the bildungsroman stage, Pip still looks down on anybody below him (his own family included). So instead of expressing gratitude for what Magwitch has done, he is disgusted. Lastly, this is around the time Pip despises what being a gentleman is like and what it has done to him. So instead of thanking Magwitch for helping him reach what was once his only goal, he resents him - blaming Magwitch for the terrible life Pip experienced as a gentleman. Magwitch explains the reason why he helped Pip was to repay him for all those years ago when Pip stole the file for him. Magwitch lived a brutal live and was unused to kindness. After Magwitch explained his entire background to Pip, he sympathized with him and later appreciated what Magwitch has done, because he recognizes the intentions were pure. This encounter also was what made Pip realize that even though he's now of the upper class, he should still be respectful to those who care about him.
